“Who is the whiny pansy that did the horrible voice-overs?” said one audience member within earshot of me at the “Spent” screening at Outfest 2001.

I had decided to perform the narration on this film myself because I was too embarassed and lazy to look for a “real” actor to do the read.  On the day of the recording session I burnt my tongue pretty badly on a bowl of piping-hot clam chowder, so I had to do about 40 takes of the entire script all while babying my tongue, hoping to end up with a decent take that didn’t sound like, well, a whiny pansy with a lisp.

The narration in the film was excerpted from an unpublished short story titled “One of My Nights With You” by Mike Gold, who was an old friend of a friend. The story is one entry in a litany of diaristic accounts of Mike’s obsession over his best friend who flirts with him just for fun, but not for love.  The images used in this short were originally made for an unrelated project.   I thought I could still use the images to underscore Mike’s writing, which I thought was not only vividly written, but also impressively honost and candid.
