Production Notes:

In the midst of enduring intolerable lower-back pain (induced by a horrid falling out with my college best friend* whom I had a hopeless crush on), I busted through animating this short about a love triangle in under six weeks so I can tell myself I’m still hot-shit while patting myself on the back for attempting to do a conventional narrative.

The film performed well and was selected by a number of film festivals but I wasn’t especially proud of it. I knew I used the gay subtext in the film to elicit laughter from straight viewers, while pandering to gay audiences by purposely designing one of my characters to look like a drawing by Tom of Finland.  I felt both like a traitor and a hypocrite, but it was a good ego boost for me, nevertheless. Since all the design work on the film were done during Monica Lewinski’s media blitz subsequent to Bill Clinton’s impeachment hearings,  by osmosis I styled the female lead’s hair after Monica’s.

By the time this short hit the film festival circuit I had already undergone a microdisectomy on my spine to take care of my back pain and I was on the rebound!  At Outfest this film was programmed to precede the world premiere of a (reportedly) sexually explicit gay feature titled “Burlesk King” by a well-established Filipino film director, which I found both incredibly flattering and profoundly mortifying.

*I don’t know if he’d call me his best friend.
