master chorale
(2000)
30 seconds
Wil Lin [director, animator]
Carl Orff [composer]
This was a 30 second spec commercial
created for the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The Chorale
had intended to use it as a promo in the previews of all the
local art house theatres, but they were very upfront about not
being able to pay--- they weren’t 100% sure that they
have the funding to advertise in the theatres in the first
place. The Chorale had in mind for the spot some abstract
animated shapes and images that gave the feeling of
“movement, beauty and drama”. I thought it
sounded a little like a commerical for women’s jeans or
tampons, so instead I animated what interested him at the time,
which were Russian icon paintings and the look of uniformed
students in Asia. The finished film was submitted to the
Chorale but they did not respond.
In the end it was the LA Phil that did the
promotional campaign in the theatres (the two organizations are
connected), and their spot did have “movement, beauty and
drama.”
A great deal of my effort was devoted to
lipsinking the Latin lyrics in the piece using a $20 morphing
software to make the mouth movements look smooth and
convincing.
