This was the film I made as a first-year
film student at UCLA. I hadn’t come out to his
classmates yet and so I thought having my film do the dirty
work seemed a lot less confrontational and therefore far more
desirable. At the time I thought androgeny—as theme
about homosexuality—was a safe place to start. Most
who responded to the film did not volunteer to make a direct
connection between the film and me personally. They most
likely refrained from doing so out of politeness and considered
it wiser to discuss the apparently more disturbing anorexic
physique of the main character on screen.
